Riggs, Racing Name – None. DOB 9/6/21, 65lbs. Never raced. Tested cat safe on day one but that may not be reliable. The description on Riggs’ profile from Australia described him as friendly, personable, affectionate, puppyish, boisterous to handle, a little anxious, and can be stubborn.
Now that we’ve met him, we think boisterous to handle is because he has probably lived in an open paddock all his life with little to no leash-walking experience. Instead of walking beside you, his gait looks more like “stand still, hop like a kangaroo for a few steps, switch from the left side to the right, hop a few more steps and then try to twirl around mid-air.” Due to his age, he will simply sit down and refuse to move if he gets nervous or overwhelmed by something new, which probably accounts for the “can be stubborn” description. Riggs is being fostered by very greyhound savvy GPAD fosterers with a 10-year-old son and two other male greyhounds. He will absolutely need experienced greyhound adopters, at least one other greyhound in his forever home that he can learn and take cues from and would do best with a fenced yard for his puppy energy bursts.
Twenty-four-hour check-in with his fosterers: Riggs is definitely benefiting from grey company! He freezes at times on walks but the company of other greys helps move him forward. He’s not really reactive/barky when confronted with another animal or something unfamiliar but he can freeze or sit down. In the house, he’s very chill – he dozes with the others, handles the stairs pretty well, and sleeps through the night like a champ. He’s a good eater, and seems to like our son (who DEFINITELY likes him). He’s super sweet and very quiet. Adorable, likes investigating everything (even with a muzzle on), and a fan of squeaky toys. It’s both hard and very easy to remember how young he is depending on the moment. I LOVE him!
