OUR MISSION
Greyhound Pet Adoptions of Delaware (GPAD) is an all volunteer organization dedicated to finding responsible, loving homes for retired greyhounds and younger dogs that can’t make the grade at the remaining two tracks in the US. In the summer of 2023, we started getting retired racers from Australia and in the spring of 2024, we got our first two dogs from New Zealand. Our goal is to let people know what excellent and loving pets these gentle, retired racers make and to find homes where they will thrive.
We place greyhounds in homes in all three Delaware counties and in MD, PA and NJ within a 45 minute drive from where our volunteers live. There are two reasons for this policy. First, we require an in-person home visit before any applicant is approved to adopt a greyhound, and it’s not realistic to expect our volunteers to drive more than an hour each way. Second, we provide ongoing support for the dogs and their adopters and want to be close enough to do that effectively.
We will place dogs in homes outside of our geographic area on a case-by-case basis. Out-of-area adoptions will be considered if the following conditions are met:
1. The adopters have previous greyhound experience.
2. A volunteer from a nearby adoption group (active or inactive) is willing to do an in-person home visit using our home visit checklist and report back to GPAD on the outcome of the visit.
3. The adopters are willing to drive to DE to pick up their dog.
GPAD doesn’t have a kennel facility, which limits the number of dogs we can bring to Delaware for adoption. All of our dogs go into foster homes as soon as they arrive from the track and the foster families share details about the dogs’ personalities as they get to know them. Each greyhound has a distinct personality and demeanor and our goal is to place the right hound in the right home. Please trust us in making a match for your family.
